“I grew up surrounded by nature. My late grandfather loved gardening and plants blossomed under his care. My school holidays were spent at my late grandmother’s Kampung house – there, I would balance myself on a narrow plant to cross the river and then run around trees in the forest. Amongst the trees, my deafness didn’t matter. When I was in Canada, my friend took me to a stream with lots of salmon. I remember just sitting there staring at these beautiful fish swimming happily for hours – the air was fresh, my heart was still and hopeful.
